Have you ever dreamed of a stairway to heaven? Jacob did, and Jesus spoke to him from top of the stairs, introduced himself as the God of his ancestors. Can you imagine yourself conversing with the Lord in person, would be the most memorable experience. I actually met the Lord in a dream long long ago, still a very special memory, but it has faded over time.
“As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway. At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants.”
Genesis 28:12-13 NLT
“Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM! ””
John 8:58 NLT
Now that the New Covenant has been activated, talking to our Father or the Lord in prayer is a common privilege. But, if Jesus were to appear, even if just in a dream, it would still be very special. It’s probably a dream for all Christians to actually meet the Lord, unless they are still enslaved to sin and can’t face him.
Back in BC days, when they didn’t have a doorway or stairway to God like we do, talking to God was less relational. I don’t know if any scriptural writings were available when Jacob lived, but since Abraham knew God somewhat, it’s likely he passed this knowledge onto Issac, and then Isaac told Jacob. But, personal experiences were rare, so this stairway dream was probably quite special.
The New Covenant allows for us to form a relationship with the Lord, he can be our best friend. And, the Holy Spirit is God‘s close presence with us, always until the end. So basically, we can already know the Lord, becoming familiar with him by intimate communication and when we take chances in faith, we see divine intervention.
This is only possible because Jesus became our stairway to heaven, and now when we store our treasures in heaven, our heart is there also. Even while walking earth, we are currently citizens of God‘s Kingdom, if our heart is truly" with God, which is paramount for salvation. We need an active relationship with the Lord, then the heart will be drawn toward holiness.
“Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth. ””
John 1:51 NLT
